Our Town, Texas Curriculum

Welcome to Our Town, Texas, a curriculum for elementary and middle school students. Our Town, Texas uses informative, interactive classroom activities designed to teach students about municipal government. Our Town, Texas was written and pilot tested by teachers. Activities are independent and can be taught separately or as a group.

The Texas City Management Association (TCMA) developed and supports the Our Town, Texas curriculum.

Curriculum

It’s not just about local government! All Our Town, Texas lessons use local government as the backdrop, but they teach the concepts and purposes of all levels of government. The lessons are interactive and fun. 

For example, the lessons on government budgeting and policy formulation bring otherwise dry subjects to life by challenging students to establish budget priorities in a mock city council session. Other lessons give students a chance to design their own government services and explore careers in public service.
